About
"The Magna Carta of Christian Science means much, multum in parvo, - all-in-one and one-in-all. It stands for the inalienable and universal rights. Essentially democratic, its government is administered by the common consent of the governed, wherein and whereby mankind, governed by his creator, is self-governed. The church is the mouthpiece of Christian Science, - its law and gospel are according to Christ Jesus; its rules are health, holiness, and immortality, -equal rights and privileges, equality of the sexes, and rotation in office." (First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany, p. 254-255).
There is no one person/pastor leading the congregation but weekly inspirations of the Bible, interpreted by Mary Baker Eddy’s “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures”, and set by the First Church of Christ Scientists in Boston MA for daily guidance. Sunday Service is conducted by 2 readers with hymnal singing and thoughts from the bible. This is a religion for thinkers with understanding of the Christ.
History
This Society is established to serve the community by promoting the truths of the Bible and upholding the teaching and practice of Christian Science as explained through the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. This congregation began meeting in 1978, and services were held in homes in Cookeville. The first public meeting place, a rented space at 46 East Broad Street, Cookeville, opened on November 8, 1987. On December 4, 1988, the meetings moved to another rented space at 107 West Broad Street. On Feb. 17, 1990, the Society purchased a building at 18 West Broad Street -- in part with money donated by the estate of Frances Brunka. When the Morristown, Tenn., Christian Science Society disbanded in April 1991, the Cookeville Society received chairs and a Hammond organ, two podiums and some Sunday-School furniture donated by the Morristown Society. In 2002 the Society sold the Broad Street property and rented space from the Baymont Inn on South Jefferson. The Baymont was sold in Sept 2016 and today the Society resides at Fickling & Madewell Attorneys, a lovely business with a welcoming homey appeal.
